Ethics and Human Condition
Description | What is our responsibility in climate change? How technology impacts our own life and what remains of free will and freedom? This class promotes reflections on the practical implications of our behavior through the gaze of ethics. Ethics is the critical thinking on the basis of which we decide how to act in a given situation. Key topics include the role of reason and emotion, gender, local vs. universal ethics, ethics and human rights, individual vs. community well-being, fundamental rights and duties, virtue and character, and the limits of rationality. |
Learning outcomes | By the end of the course, students will be able to: • Demonstrate a confident understanding of the key ethical principles in philosophy and apply them in real life; • Demonstrate an ability to use these ethical concepts to make a decision; • Demonstrate a confident understanding and knowledge of the key ethical theories and control one's emotions in situations of moral ambiguity; • Know how to evaluate, analyse and criticise philosophical arguments effectively and translate this into conscious behaviour; • Understand the philosophical issues involved in some specific empirical questions; • Present coherent arguments in written and oral form in support of one's own ideas. |
