This 14-week course provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Italian music, from the Florentine Renaissance through the early 20th century. Beginning with Renaissance music in Florence—an homage to the city considered the birthplace of Italian opera—the course offers an opportunity to understand how political, social, and cultural factors have continually shaped the arts. Students will explore the development of musical styles, key composers, instrumental innovations, and the evolution of vocal and theatrical music within its historical context.
