Description |
This course explores artwork produced in Italy from the late 13th century to the late 16th century. It will focus on the relationship of the works of art to their cultural and historical background, with emphasis placed on the function of the artwork as well as its relationship to a variety of themes: the artwork’s patron, the artist, location, style, themes of gender and identity, exchange of style through trade, restoration/conservation as well as meaning for the audience of the time-period. Within a broad chronological framework, we will approach the material through an emphasis on specific sites (the church, the convent, the piazza) and themes (portraiture, the nude, mythological works). |

Learning outcomes |
Students will familiarize themselves with the development of Italian art in the period in question, medieval and Renaissance artwork in regards to materials, historical significance and style. They will learn how to observe and write about art and become more proficient in their rhetorical and writing skills, while also increasing their knowledge of Italian society and history. |
